Advising and registration

Advisor meeting with student

If you need help navigating the process of choosing or changing your major, registering for classes or ensuring you’re meeting the requirements for graduation, your advisor can keep you on track.

Advisors are available to help you understand your major and general education and graduation requirements. They will help you develop educational plans that meet your goals and register for appropriate courses, as well as answer most university and academic questions.

Your advisor will expect you to take charge of your educational program and understand important forms, such as graduation worksheets, as well as be aware of critical dates, such as registration, financial aid and tuition and fee deadlines, and the final exam schedule.

Finding your advisor

First-year students in the College are assigned a specific advisor in the University College located in Hibbs Hall. After declaring a major and completing your freshman year, you are assigned a faculty advisor in your major department.

If you have not declared a major by the end of your freshman year, you will continue to be advised by your assigned professional advisor. Since sophomores are required to declare a major at the completion of 60 credit hours, you should work closely with your advisor throughout your sophomore year to select a major.

Advising for pre-dental hygiene, pre-nursing, pre-occupational therapy, pre-physical therapy, pre-radiation sciences, pre-medical and pre-dental programs is available in the Pre-health Sciences Office, located in Hibbs Hall, Room 208.

If you are unsure of who your advisor is, call the Office of Academic Advising at (804) 827-UNIV (8648). You can also identify your advisor and schedule advising appointments using the myVCU portal by tabbing over to Academics and following the directions to schedule advising appointments.

Scheduling advising appointments

We recommend that you meet with your advisor at least once each semester to discuss current classes and select and register for classes for the coming semester. However, first-year students may want to visit their advisor twice each semester — once in the first few weeks of the semester and again around registration time.

Freshman or undeclared students should call (804) 827-UNIV (8648), or e-mail your advisor to schedule an appointment. Upperclassmen who have declared a major should contact your departmental office. You can also schedule an appointment through the myVCU portal by tabbing over to Academics and following the directions to schedule advising appointments.
