Transferring credit

Students in Schafer CourtWhether you’re transferring from a community college or another university, or plan to take courses at another institution, you should be familiar with the process for transferring credit to VCU to ensure you receive proper credit for completed courses.

Transfer students

The Transfer Guide Web site offers guidelines for planning your general education courses at a Virginia community college, as well as a course equivalency database to identify the credit you will receive. If you transfer to VCU with C grades or better you can be assured that they will be accepted as equivalent to the specified VCU courses or as electives, unless noted otherwise.

Please note that the Transfer Guide is not a detailed analysis and may exclude some specific major requirements. Students planning to transfer to VCU should refer to the current Undergraduate Bulletin for the specific degree requirements of their intended major. Students are encouraged to contact the VCU Transfer Center at (804) 827-1349 with general transfer questions. Students may also consult with your college counselor and e-mail or call the VCU contact person for your intended area of study. VCU’s University College can also help transfer students work with undergraduate admissions through the transfer process.

You must verify transfer credit awarded for VCU courses before registering to avoid enrolling in courses that may duplicate credit you have already received.

If you plan to declare a major in the College and have specific transfer questions, you should contact the VCU Transfer Center at (804) 827-1349 and ask to speak to a transfer advisor who handles questions about the College.

Taking a course at another institution

Four steps should be followed by students who plan to take a course during the summer, or any other time, at another college or university.

  1. You must complete the Request to Take Courses at Another Institution form PDF, available in Hibbs Hall, Room 211. Deliver completed forms to the Office of Student Services in Hibbs 211 for the approval of the dean.
  2. Meet with your advisor to see if the course is transferable to VCU. The Transfer Guide also offers some relevant information.
  3. Finally, remember that you are responsible for having one transcript from the other institution sent to Records and Registration at VCU.
