Study abroad

Students in Barbados

Have you always envisioned life in a foreign country? At VCU, you can earn course credit while exploring anywhere from Brazil and China to Italy and Africa.

VCU encourages students from all majors to receive part of their education in an international environment and the Office of International Education can help you learn about education abroad opportunities.

Whether you’re looking for a summer program studying German language in Vienna or ecological diversity in Puerto Rico, or want to spend your spring break learning about biology in the Sonora Desert through VCU’s short-term programs, the OIE has myriad opportunities to study abroad. You’ll experience life and learning in different cultures, increase your knowledge of a foreign language and understand the differences in educational styles and systems.

While the short-term programs are made up of primarily VCU and U.S. students, the International Student Exchange Program, a network of universities throughout the world, is designed as an immersion experience. Throughout your semester- or yearlong experience, you will likely be the only student from VCU, and one of few from the U.S., at the host university.

VCU is also part of a network of international partnership universities that emphasize collaboration in an international and multicultural setting. These partnerships allow for student and faculty exchanges, lectures and conferences, research projects, dual degree programs, and specialized summer programs, such as studying mass communications at Beijing Foreign Studies University in China.

If you’re looking for a specific program not offered at VCU, you can also visit the OIE to learn about non-VCU programs, such as opportunities offered by other U.S. universities, direct enrollment in a foreign university and programs with independent study abroad providers.

Whatever you’re looking for, be sure to visit the university’s Study Abroad Blog for the latest education abroad news and links to student blogs on their experiences traveling the world.
