The Office of Student Services in the College provides student academic services and administrative coordination and support for the effective and efficient implementation of undergraduate programs and courses offered through the College. Essential to the mission of the office are the timely and correct review of graduation applications, the timely and correct processing of change of major requests and the processing of petitions for students who request waivers of university regulations.

Information for students

The OSS coordinates the change of major process for students at the sophomore level and above who intend to change their major to a program of study within the College. The office also coordinates the graduation application review process for the College and assists students, faculty, advisors and schools and departments to resolve problems that prevent timely graduation. Some specific tasks completed by the OSS are as follows:

  • Review graduation applications received from the schools and departments for fulfillment of all requirements and communicate the status of graduation to students
  • Notify students and schools and departments of problems that prevent students from achieving graduation eligibility and how to resolve graduation problems
  • Initial contact for appeals to the Academic Regulations Appeals Committee
  • Assist students considering changing their majors to a program of study offered in the College, process the change of major/concentration/minor forms [PDF] and refer students to their new faculty advisor based on their new major
  • Interpret and update the graduation worksheets (and online degree audits) and answer general curricular questions for undergraduates in the College
  • Recommend and evaluate course substitution and waiver requests (see your advisor for more information)
  • Process requests to take courses at another institution [PDF]
  • Process requests for grade exclusions [PDF]
  • Provide customer service to students, parents, faculty, academic advisors and other VCU staff who have questions about College and university academic procedures and curriculum requirements
  • Assist with the evaluation of transfer credit for continuing students submitted to the College and refer students to the VCU Transfer Center at (804) 827-1349 as necessary
