Research interests:
insect ecology and behavior, insect-plant
interactions, arthropods as biosensors
Dr. Karen
Kester is an entomologist who specializes
in insect behavior and ecology. One of her
research interests is the use of insects
and other arthropods
as sentinels for detecting harmful agents
of human importance in the environment.
Another interest is the behavior and evolutionary
ecology
of tritrophic interactions involving plants,
caterpillars and parasitic wasps. Current
projects include the use of indigenous
arthropods
for
detecting bioterorrism agents, the role
of host-plant affiliations in structuring parasitoid
populations,
and the role of learning in facilitating
microevolutionary changes in insect populations.
Kester teaches
courses in entomology, ecology, evolution
and introductory biology.
