Dr. John Pagels received his Ph.D. in 1970 from Tulane University. Pagles is a mammalogist who specializes in nongame species. Much of his work has involved the ecology patterns of distribution of mammals of the mid-Atlantic states. Recent studies by Pagels and his students have explored population attributes of small mammals in different habitats. Ongoing efforts include delineation of the distribution and habitat of the water shrew, rock voles and northern flying squirrel, all relicts of the ice age in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Pagels initiated the VCU Mammal Collection — with more than 16,000 specimens, it is the largest collection of Virginia mammals in the United States. Pagels also is the director of graduate studies for the Department of Biology.
