Dr. John Ryan received his Ph.D. from VCU in 1993 and now is a molecular immunologist with interests in signal transduction events that control mast cell development and function. As mast cells are pivotal for the allergic diseases and offer an interesting model system for hematopoietic cell development, Ryan’s work has impact on the studies of allergy, asthma, cell differentiation and cancer. His current research interests are focused on understanding how IL-4 controls the expression of several allergy-related genes at the molecular level, and how the c-Kit receptor induces proliferation and differentiation of mast cells.
