Dr. J. “Clint” Turbeville received his Ph.D. in 1986 from Clemson University. Turbeville's research focuses on the systematics of major animal groups. He is currently using molecular and morphological characters to reconstruct the phylogeny of metazoan taxa. Taxa currently being investigated include, among others, flatworms (Platyhelminthes), nemerteans (Nemertea) and urochordates (Chordata). A reliable phylogeny of the Metazoa will provide insight into character evolution, and the results will have implications for hypotheses concerning the diversification of the bilateral animals (Bilateria) and evolution of developmental programs. Turbeville's other interests include the natural history of coastal marine invertebrates and freshwater leeches.
