Dr. Faye Belgrave

Dr. Faye Belgrave joined VCU’s Department of Psychology in 1997. Since that time, her collaborative efforts through the Center for Cultural Experiences in Prevention have worked to reduce the numbers of youth and adults at-risk for substance abuse, HIV and sexually transmitted diseases, as well as to promote health and safe behaviors among youth and adults in the Richmond community. Belgrave has received more than $5 million to implement and examine the effectiveness of prevention programs and she has worked with the Richmond Public Schools, health clinics and community-based organizations such as the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Richmond and faith-based organizations. Current community projects include Project Gumboyaya, an HIV prevention curriculum for African-American adult females; Culturally Enhanced Prevention Services, a culturally integrated drug- and sex-education program undertaken with the Richmond Public Schools; and the Virginia Tobacco Settlement Project, which examines cultural and protective factors against smoking among African-American youth.
