Emerging Scholars Program in chemistry If you have an interest in a science- or math-related career such as chemistry, pre-medicine or forensic science and would like to improve your chances for doing well in your first year of chemistry, the ESP in chemistry could be ideal for you. How it works Each Emerging Scholars workshop meets twice weekly for two hours each session. In these sessions you will perform tasks to familiarize yourself with “speaking” chemistry. You also will receive two credits for the workshop. Why YOU should participate in the ESP As a participant in the ESP, you will:
With the high competition in certain careers, it is essential that students maintain an “A” or “B” in their science courses. ESP participation helps you accomplish this goal. You will receive tutoring and assistance with homework problems assigned in your chemistry lecture and take practice exams and quizzes. Performance of students in the ESP In a recent ESP program, seven out of 10 students earned either an “A” or “B” in chemistry, while only about three out of 10 of the non-ESP students performed as well. Students who did not participate were three times more likely to have to repeat chemistry than the ESP students. If you would like to know whether this program is for you, Dr. Charlene D. Crawley
