Degree Requirements and Program Curriculum

The Bachelor of Science curriculum in Criminal Justice requires a minimum of 120 university credits, 36 of which must be in criminal justice.  Along with the general education requirements of the College of Humanities and Sciences and Academic Campus Requirements, the student majoring in criminal justice must take:

  • CRJ 181,  Criminal Justice Survey;
  • CRJ 260,  Criminal Law;
  • CRJ 355,  Foundations of Criminal Justice;
  • CRJ 380, Research Methods in Criminal Justice;
  • CRJ 475, Case Studies in Criminal Procedure;

and one of the following capstone courses:

  • CRJ 480, Senior Seminar (a capstone assessment of the central issues and emerging trends in criminal justice);
  • CRJ 493, Internship (placement for qualified students in a criminal justice agency for supervised work experience).

Topics courses can not be used to satisfy these distribution requirements.

Students also take 18 credits of elective courses in criminal justice in consultation with their advisor.  These courses should be selected to insure breadth of coverage of the field and in light of the career aspirations of the student.

Minor Requirements - General

Students majoring in criminal justice cannot minor in criminal justice.   The minor in criminal justice consists of 18 credits, including the successful completion of each of the following courses: CRJS 181, Criminal Justice Survey; CRJS 260, Criminal Law; CRJS 355, Foundations of Criminal Justice; CRJS 475 Criminal Procedure; and two CRJS elective courses.  Note: CRJS 492 and 493 are not available to those  minoring in CRJS.
