Through the Extended
Teacher Preparation Program students interested in teaching
early childhood/elementary, middle, secondary or special education
will complete studies combining the liberal arts and sciences
with professional studies in an integrated sequence, typically
over a five-year period. Individuals completing the program
receive the simultaneous awarding of a bachelor of science
or a bachelor of arts in a liberal arts and sciences major
(English, mathematics, biology, etc.), a Master of Teaching,
and an endorsement to teach in their chosen field of professional
study.
Preparation for a Career in K-12 Teaching
The College of Humanities and Sciences, in partnership with
the School
of Education, provides the foundation that students need
to prepare for a career in K-12 teaching. For most students,
this preparation is handled by enrolling in one of the extended
programs. The extended programs involve a five-year period,
and the student receives a B.A. or B.S. in an academic area
as well as a master's degree in education.
As part of the background for a career in K-12 teaching,
students must master material addressed in Virginia's Standards
of Learning. College courses whose content provide the knowledge-base
that Virginia's future teachers will need to teach to the
SOLs can be accessed from the
School of Education Web site.
