Office of the dean scholarships are available either through application or award by department or committee within the College of Humanities and Sciences. An asterisk (*) signifies that an application is required.

The Yvonne Engleson Rodriguez Benner Scholarship*

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy

Established by family and friends in honor of Yvonne Engleson Rodriguez Benner, an active and admired member of VCU’s Board of Visitors and an advocate of higher education who passed away in August 2001, this scholarship is awarded based on merit and need to a Hispanic student majoring in journalism, government, English, Latin American studies, international affairs or a related field. The scholarship may be renewed for an additional three years provided the student remains in good academic standing.

Initiatives of the Bersoff Funds Scholarship*

Funded with gifts from Edward Bersoff, Ph.D., a member of the VCU Board of Visitors, this scholarship is awarded to any student within the College of Humanities and Sciences. Bersoff is the chairman and founder of Greenwich Associates LLC. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from New York University, where he studied mathematics.

The Marika L. Byrd Scholarship*

Established by Marika L. Byrd, a graduate of the Nontraditional Studies Program who served as a member and former president of the Nontraditional Studies Alumni Council at VCU, this scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior enrolled in the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program. The scholarship is awarded based on merit, and the selected student must have and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The scholarship can be renewed for an additional three years provided the student maintains the required GPA and remains in the B.I.S. program.

The Jeffrey S. Cribbs Sr. Endowed Scholarship in Philanthropy*

The Jeffrey S. Cribbs Sr. Endowed Scholarship in Philanthropy is awarded to a student pursuing a career in philanthropy and who is committed to serving the nonprofit community in Richmond and Central Virginia. While preference will be given to graduate students enrolled in the College of Humanities and Sciences, the scholarship application is open to all graduate students of the university who are enrolled full-time in a major or interdisciplinary field related to philanthropy and who are in good academic standing.

Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence*

Amount: $500

The Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence is awarded to a junior- or senior-level student majoring in an area of study in the College of Humanities and Sciences. Eligible candidates must have a GPA of 3.2 or higher.

Rozanne Garrett Epps Undergraduate Scholarship*

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy.

Established by friends and Epps family members, this scholarship is named for Rozanne Garrett Epps, former director of evening and off-campus studies, who retired in 1986. The scholarship is administered by the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program and is intended for adults who return to school after being in the workforce. Juniors and seniors from all undergraduate majors are invited to apply. Selection will be based on need.

Julia Halley Latane Scholarship*

In memory of their aunt Julia Latane, Susan R. Daves and Kate R. Forbes established this scholarship in 1986 for degree-seeking working adults. The scholarship is administered by the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program and is based on need and academic achievement. Juniors and seniors from all undergraduate majors are eligible.

Phi Kappa Phi scholarships

Amount: Varies
Deadline: Eligible students will be notified by e-mail and invited to apply.

These scholarships are awarded to juniors in B.S. or B.A. College degree programs who have maintained a minimum GPA of 3.6 and earned a minimum of 45 credit hours.

Meadows L. Phillips and Thomas H. Weatherford Veterans Scholarship*

The Meadows L. Phillips and Thomas H. Weatherford Veterans Scholarship was established in 2005 through a memorial gift from Mr. and Mrs. David Phillips in memory of his father, Meadows L. Phillips, and in honor of his cousin, Thomas H. Weatherford. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time undergraduate or graduate student who has been honorably discharged from one of the U.S. armed forces. Two scholarships are available with preference given to (1) an undergraduate/graduate student in the College of Humanities and Sciences and (2) a student pursuing a career in education, administration or teaching.

Joan Rexinger Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Scholarship*

Daniel M. and Joan Rexinger (B.G.S ’86) established this award in 1997 for full- and part-time juniors and seniors who have returned to school as adults in the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program. Recipients must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Edward E. Willey Scholarship

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy
Deadline: Applicants will be recommended by their respective department chair.

Established in honor of Sen. Edward A. Willey — member of the Virginia Senate from 1952-83 — this scholarship is awarded to a graduate student in the following programs: public administration, criminal justice, urban studies, recreation or rehabilitation counseling.
