African American Studies

The Smedley Family Scholarship

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy
Deadline: Feb. 1

Established in 2001 by Audrey Y. Smedley, Ph.D., in honor of her parents, the purpose of this scholarship is to encourage serious study and research, and to support qualified students who have an interest in Africa and/or the African-American experience. The award will be given to a full-time undergraduate student majoring in African American studies and will be based on merit. The recipient must maintain a 3.0 GPA and not be engaged in full-time employment off-campus. The scholarship may be renewed as long as the student remains in good academic standing.

Charles and LeAnn Blem Scholarship*

Application: Contact the Department of Biology for an application.

Charles and Leann Blem faithfully served VCU as professors in the Department of Biology for more than 30 years. In honor of their retirement, family and friends established the Blem Scholarship. It is awarded to a junior or senior who is majoring in biology with specific interest in vertebrates, vertebrate ecology or vertebrate anatomy. The scholarship may also be awarded to a student who has completed research in the Department of Biology with emphasis in those areas, a pre-veterinary or professional student who plans to attend graduate school, or any athletes who are biology majors.

Lewis C. Goldstein Award of Excellence

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy
Deadline: Feb. 1

In 1985, Margaret L. May and other friends and colleagues of Lewis Goldstein, Ph.D., created this fund in his memory. Goldstein began working at VCU in 1955 as one of four members of the science department and retired after three decades with the university. This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior biology major based on merit.

The Miles F. Johnson Award

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy

The Johnson award was established in 2008 by Professor Emeritus and former chair of the Department of Biology, Miles F. Johnson, Ph.D. This scholarship is intended to provide students majoring in biology with support for the purchase of textbooks and supplies. 

The Arthur J. Seidenberg Scholarship*

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy

Alumni, family, friends, faculty and staff established this scholarship to honor Arthur Seidenberg, Ph.D., assistant dean in the College, upon his retirement in December 2002. Seidenberg began his 34-year career at VCU teaching in the Department of Biology. The scholarship is awarded to a current pre-medical student who has been recommended by faculty and members of the Pre-Medical Advisory Committee and who has been offered a position at a medical school for the upcoming fall semester. Students who entered VCU under the Guaranteed Admission Program in the VCU School of Medicine are not eligible.

Jon and Wendy Baker Award

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy

The Baker award was established in 2000 to honor Jon Baker — who received a B.S. in Biology in 1993 and a B.S. in Chemistry in 1994 — and his wife Wendy. The award provides funding for a deserving student to participate with tutoring summer session students and become involved in a summer research project in the laboratory of a chemistry faculty member.

Gerald and Susan Bass Scholarship

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy
Deadline: Feb. 1

Upon his retirement from the Department of Chemistry in 1998, R. Gerald Bass, Ph.D., and his wife Susan, established this endowment. The scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate chemistry student based on need or merit.

David F. Ingraham Scholarship

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy
Deadline: Feb. 1

The Richmond Chromatography Discussion Group established this scholarship in memory of one of its members, David F. Ingraham. The scholarship is awarded to a chemistry major who is entering his/her junior year with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a chemistry GPA of 3.0, and is proposing to conduct a project in the separation sciences.

James V. Quagliano Fellowship in Chemistry

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy
Deadline: Feb. 1

The family of James V. Quagliano, Ph.D., established this endowment in 2005 in his memory. Quagliano was the husband of Lidia M. Vallarino Quagliano, Ph.D., professor in the VCU Department of Chemistry. The fellowship is awarded to a Ph.D. candidate in chemistry who has successfully completed his/her cumulative exams.

Albert T. Sneden III Scholarship

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy
Deadline: Feb. 1

The Albert T. Sneden III Scholarship in chemistry was established by alumni, friends and associates of Sneden upon his retirement to honor his 28-year career at VCU. Sneden was the former executive associate dean of the College and is a professor emeritus in the Department of Chemistry. The scholarship is available to qualified undergraduate or graduate students majoring in chemistry.

Dr. Billy L. Stump and Dr. Raphael M. Ottenbrite Fellowship in Chemistry

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy
Deadline: Feb. 1

This scholarship was established to honor the teaching, scholarship and mentoring of Billy Stump, Ph.D., (posthumous) and Raphael Ottenbrite, Ph.D., former professors of Chemistry at VCU. The fellowship is designated for a graduate student in the Department of Chemistry. Preference will be given to a graduate student who intends to pursue a career in the industry.

Lidia M. Vallarino Scholarship

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy
Deadline: Feb. 1

Established by Lidia M. Vallarino-Quagliano, Ph.D., a professor in the VCU Department of Chemistry for 22 years, this scholarship honors graduate students pursuing a Ph.D. in the College of Humanities and Sciences Department of Chemistry.

English

E. Allan Brown Scholarship

To honor E. Allan Brown, department chair from 1951-70, friends established this scholarship bearing his name. The scholarship is awarded to an English major in his/her senior year based on merit.

Jean R. Riely Fund Scholarship

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy
Deadline: Feb. 1

Jean Roy Riely (B.A. ’81, M.A. ’84) created this fund in 1992. It is awarded to a female rising junior or senior English major who has completed one full semester and returned to college after a significant absence.

Forensic Science

The Emily R. Murphy Scholarship in Forensic Science

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy
Deadline: Feb. 1

This scholarship was established in honor of Emily Murphy, who lost her life in an automobile accident on Nov. 2, 2002. Murphy, a smart, dedicated student and an inspiration to faculty and students alike, had just begun her graduate studies in the program. The scholarship is awarded each spring to a graduate student in forensic science based on merit.

History

Thelma Sara Biddle Scholarship

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy
Deadline: Feb. 1

Established in memory of Thelma Sara Biddle, Ph.D., who taught in Richmond area public schools and then in the department for two decades before being named assistant professor emeritus, this award is given to a full-time junior- or senior-level student majoring in history with the intention of teaching at the middle, secondary or college level.

William E. Blake Scholarship

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy
Deadline: Feb. 1

This scholarship honors William E. Blake, Ph.D., who taught in the department for 25 years before being named professor emeritus upon his retirement. Blake joined the university, then the Richmond Professional Institute, in 1965. He was named associate professor in 1969 and became a full professor in 1977. This merit-based scholarship is awarded to a full-time advanced undergraduate or graduate student majoring in history with a demonstrated interest in the history of Europe.

Alan Vance Briceland Scholarship

The Alan Vance Briceland Scholarship was established by Alan Briceland, Ph.D., professor emeritus of history, and is awarded to an undergraduate student who has received a grade of A in HIST 300 Introduction to Historical Study. The recipient will be selected by the History Department Honors and Awards Committee.

Penelope Warren Briceland Scholarship

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy
Deadline: Feb. 1

The Penelope Warren Briceland Scholarship is established in her memory by her husband, Alan Briceland, Ph.D. It is awarded to an undergraduate student who has received a grade of A in HIST 300 Introduction to Historical Study. The recipient will be selected by the History Department Honors and Awards Committee.

Daniel P. Jordan Scholarship

Deadline: Feb. 1

The Daniel P. Jordan Scholarship was established by William H. Mattox to honor the teaching, mentoring, scholarship and inspiration of Daniel Jordan, Ph.D., former professor and chair of the department. Jordan is also known for his leadership as the former executive director of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation. The scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate student majoring in history.

Craig E. Kennedy Scholarship*

Amount: $500 per semester
Deadline: Feb. 1
Application: Contact the Department of History for an application.

This scholarship was established by Craig Kennedy, husband of the late Susan Estabrook Kennedy, Ph.D. Two scholarships are awarded annually. The recipients are determined by a committee in the Department of History. An application is required. Candidates must have a 3.5 GPA if applying for the scholarship on a merit basis, or a 2.5 GPA if seeking the award for both need and merit. Both undergraduate and graduate students majoring in history are eligible.

Susan Estabrook Kennedy Memorial Scholarship

The College established the Susan Estabrook Kennedy Memorial Scholarship in honor of Susan E. Kennedy, Ph.D., who is remembered as a “woman of firsts.” She published the first book produced by a member of the history department, was the first woman promoted to associate and full professor of history, the first to chair the department, and was VCU’s first recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. In addition, Kennedy served as administrative associate to the president, as associate and interim dean of the College, and as acting vice provost for academic affairs. The award will be made annually to an undergraduate history major based on merit.

James T. Moore Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2008 by faculty and faculty emeriti of the Department of History, the College of Humanities and Sciences, and alumni and friends of The College in honor of James Tice Moore, Ph.D., who taught history at VCU for 31 years. Moore passed away in the spring of 2009. The scholarship is for graduate students enrolled in the Department of History M.A. program, with a preference given to history/social studies teachers employed in public or private middle or secondary schools.

The Mary Lou Gibson Memorial Scholarship

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy
Deadline: Feb. 1

This scholarship was established by J. Larry Gibson in honor of his wife, Mary Lou Gibson, who died on Feb.11, 2002. She was a retired adjunct instructor, and in 1986 became the first teacher-in-residence in VCU’s Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. The recipient must be a rising junior or senior mathematics major with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and must demonstrate intent to teach mathematics.

Bijan Rao Scholarship

The College and the Department of Physics established the Bijan Rao Scholarship in Physics in honor of Bijan K. Rao, Ph.D., a beloved physics professor known for his research in atomic clusters and nanoscale science. Rao passed away in May 2004. The scholarship will be awarded annually to an undergraduate physics major and will be assessed on academic merit.

Psychology

The Corazzini Award for Therapeutic Group Work

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy
Deadline: Feb. 1

The scholarship was established jointly by the Department of Psychology and University Counseling Services to honor John (Jack) Corazzini, Ph.D., director of Counseling Services and a professor in the Department of Psychology. Corazzini was active in research on and theorizing about the dynamics of therapy groups. He was both a scientist and a practitioner. The award will be given annually to a graduate student who has demonstrated interest in therapy groups, and whose proposal for a project in the area is judged to be the most meritorious and the most likely to be accomplished.

Elizabeth Fries Memorial Scholarship in Psychology

The Elizabeth A. Fries Scholarship in Psychology was established in her memory by family, friends, colleagues and students. Fries, a Ph.D., was a renowned professor and researcher in the department who died in 2005. The scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate student in psychology.

The John P. Hill Award for the Study of Adolescent Development

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy
Deadline: Feb. 1

This scholarship was established in 1989 in honor of John P. Hill, Ph.D., former Department of Psychology chair and internationally acclaimed scholar in the field of adolescence. The award is given each year to a graduate student in psychology who exhibits high academic standards and evidence of promise in research in adolescent or family development.

Just Research*

Amount: As determined by the VCU Foundation distribution policy

The Just Research Scholarship was established by Robert Green, Ph.D., and his wife. Green earned a B.S. degree (with honors) in psychology in 1967 and an M.S.W. degree from the School of Social Work in 1970. He served as a faculty member at the School of Social Work from 1975 to 2005, and upon his retirement was awarded the rank of professor emeritus.

Donald J. Kiesler Fund for Clinical Psychology

The Kiesler Fund supports and enhances the Clinical Psychology Program and may be used to support graduate student research, awards to honor distinguished alumni and other program or curricular enhancements for the Clinical Psychology Program. 

The Melvin V. Lubman Scholarship

The Melvin V. Lubman Scholarship was established by Mrs. Golde Lubman Feldman. The scholarship honors Mr. Lubman’s dedication and service as a professor in the department of psychology. The scholarship is available to undergraduates majoring in psychology.  

Master’s Level Award Scholarship

Established by an anonymous donor in 1998 in honor of Evelyn E. Gunst, this scholarship is awarded to a master’s-level graduate student. It is based on merit and financial need.

Deborah Braffman Schroeder Research Scholarship

Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy
Deadline: Feb. 1

Established in memoriam in 1990 by the family of Deborah Braffman Schroeder, a former Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Psychology, this scholarship is awarded to a graduate student in clinical psychology who has demonstrated financial need. Preference is given to students who pursue research in psychology.

Women’s Studies

Scholarship for Women’s International Studies Experiences*

Established by an anonymous donor, this scholarship provides funding for a deserving student to participate in women’s studies international experiences such as a semester study abroad, summer study abroad or other international or global activist experiences where academic credit is earned. The recipient must seek a major or minor in women’s studies, have a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher at the time of application and demonstrate campus or community leadership or service.
