In the fall of 2002, the Department of English at Virginia Commonwealth University joined with New Virginia Review, Inc., to begin production and publication of Blackbird: an online journal of literature and the arts.

A premier journal featuring literature, art, interviews, and streaming media, Blackbird is produced with the help of Department faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Its advisors include faculty members of the nationally ranked VCU School of the Arts and curators from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Hand Workshop Art Center, and the Reynolds Gallery in Richmond.

The journal provides opportunities for internships and volunteer positions to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as an editorship for an outstanding graduate teaching assistant from the MA, MFA and new PhD programs.
