VCU Life Sciences receives grants to study shad, oysters

VCU associate professor Bonnie Brown has received two multiyear grants totaling more than $400,000 for her work with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. For the latter, Brown will employ a sampling strategy, molecular-based screening and mathematical modeling approach to evaluate and help restore American shad to the James River. The combination of watershed enhancement and population supplementation strategies has led to an increase in the formerly at-risk American shad population of the James River.

The project, in conjunction with the EPA and Dr. Kurt Stephenson of the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at Virginia Tech, will assist the Chesapeake Bay area states in finding low-cost, environmentally friendly and efficient ways to achieve bay area nutrient goals. Should Brown and Stephenson document reductions that can be attributed to the increase in oyster aquaculture production, growers in the bay states could earn nutrient assimilation credits that are directly linked to each state’s overall nutrient load-reduction goals.

College welcomes new faculty

New facultyThe College of Humanities and Sciences continues growing as we welcome 64 new faculty members. Each member brings their own unique attributes to the College in areas such as math, English, biology, history and forensic science.

College establishes new Dean’s Society

The hopes and dreams of our students and their lifelong success depend upon the support of leadership gifts from alumni and friends of VCU. When you contribute to the College of Humanities and Sciences, you provide scholarships, opportunities for research, study abroad and internships. You enable the College to retain the best faculty. You bring prominent and nationally recognized speakers and guest lecturers to campus. Through giving, you lead. You guide. You inspire.

To encourage leadership gifts, the College is establishing the Dean’s Society, an exclusive group of committed alumni and friends who make an annual contribution of $250 and more. Dean’s Society members enjoy special invitations to programs and lectures, receptions with the dean and other privileges. For information on joining, contact Lois Badey, director of development, at labadey@vcu.edu or (804) 827-0856. Or simply make your donation online at www.egiving.vcuf.org/egiving_center.html. Your support is greatly appreciated.
