Phillips and Weatherford Veterans Scholarship awarded
The Meadows L. Phillips and Thomas H. Weatherford Veterans Scholarship was established in 2005 through a memorial gift from Mr. and Mrs. David Phillips in memory of his father, Meadows L. Phillips, and in honor of his cousin, Thomas H. Weatherford. This year’s recipient is Nathanial Kesner, a criminal justice major with aspirations to become an attorney focusing on environmental issues.
Kesner served in the National Guard for six years during which time he was deployed to the Gulf Coast in support of Hurricane Katrina and to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. A recipient of three Army achievement medals and a member of the Honors Society of Phi Kappa Phi National, Kesner spent the spring of 2006 as an intern in the Virginia Capital Semester in the office of Sen. Creigh R. Deeds.
Kesner will graduate with honors in December of 2006.
Just Research Scholarship
Earlier this year, Dr. and Mrs. Robert Green established the Just Research Scholarship at VCU. Dr. Green earned a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in psychology in 1967 and an M.S.W. degree from the School of Social Work in 1970. He was a faculty member at the School of Social Work from 1975 to 2005, and was awarded the rank of professor emeritus upon his retirement. He also was very active throughout his career in the VCU Department of Psychology.
The Just Research Scholarship will support and encourage the continuing development of quantitative research knowledge and skills among second-year social work graduate students who have earned undergraduate degrees in psychology at VCU.
