A message from the dean
College celebrates 40 years of excellence
Welcome to the College of Humanities and Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University. I am pleased to exchange with you news of recent developments within the College. This is an exciting time at VCU, as you will see in this issue.
For over 40 years, the College of Humanities and Sciences has been the heart of the Monroe Park Campus. Witness our explosive growth
and our current student body of 14,000. There are now fifteen departments and programs in the College as well as three schools, which include the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs, the School of Mass Communications and the School of World Studies.
Throughout the coming year, you will be receiving regular updates about the College through the Exchange, through our new Alumni Relations and Development Office and through our enhanced Web site. This fall, we will be publishing an annual report, the Snapshot, which showcases our dramatic expansion over the past decade.
There are many ways to participate in the life of the College. I invite you to take advantage of the diverse enrichment programs and activities that we offer. There are other opportunities to show leadership, such as joining the VCU Alumni Association, volunteering your service or becoming a member of the Dean’s Society.
Whether you graduated from RPI, graduated in the last decade or recently became a new member of our alumni, I hope you feel a sense of community as you read this edition. We will be making a concerted effort to involve you in the life of the College and to improve our communication with you. If at any time you have ideas or suggestions, please contact me directly at rholswor@vcu.edu. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Robert D. Holsworth, dean
