The following guidelines must be observed by all students
and their advisors when
planning a program of study and
BEFORE registering for a foreign language class:
1.
Students with no significant background in a
language (e.g., never took
the
language in high school) should register for the first
course
(designated 101) without taking the Language
Placement Test (LPT).
2.
Students with 2 units or less of a language
on their high school
transcript who wish to continue studying that same
language are
permitted to enroll for credit into the first
course (101) without taking the
LPT.
These students, however, may elect to take the test for
possible
placement into a higher level.
3.
Students with
3 units of high school language must enroll
in the second
course (designated 102) or higher to obtain degree credit
but are permitted
to
retake the first course (101) on an audit basis as
review.
4.
Students with 3 or more high school units of
language must take the
placement test before enrolling in a course in that
language and are
subject to the minimum restrictions listed in the
preceding paragraph.
5.
Students receiving college transfer credit
must enroll in the next level
course to complete their language requirement or to
continue their
language study, but may enroll in a lower-level course for
audit as a review.
6.
Native and semi-native speakers must take
the placement test before
enrolling for a course. Normally, such students are
eligible only for 202 and
300/400 level courses.
All
students wishing to continue study of a language learned
either formally or informally before coming to VCU are
eligible and encouraged to take the placement test. The
test is to be taken only once BEFORE students register for
a language course. Since
successful performance enables student to fulfill certain
university degree requirements and to continue study at a
higher level, they are urged to prepare in advance for the
test. Students are strongly advised to fulfill their
language requirement early in their program of study at
VCU.
Failure
to adhere to these procedures and misrepresentation of
background and ability will result in the loss of credit.
Requests for exemptions from this placement test policy
must be submitted in writing to the Chair of the
Department of Foreign Languages. Instructors have the
right to verify a student’s level of proficiency and
make recommendations to the language coordinators and
Chair. These guidelines apply to all VCU students
(freshmen, continuing, and transfer).
N.B. Students
placing into a level above 101 fulfill part or all of
their
language
requirement,
but do not earn VCU degree credit on the basis
of their LPT.
