Deciphering the Ungerhof Menu
The Ungerhof is a popular, inexpensive restaurant, near the Griesplatz (across the river from the "Deutsch in Graz" school). The menu features traditional Austrian dishes such as Wienerschnitzel and Gulash, but also more exotic dishes. See if you can figure out what is what on the menu. First, we'll look at some names of typical items you'll find on a menu.

Main Dishes (Hauptgerichte)
- Wiener Schnitzel - breaded cutlet, with meat being veal, pork or turkey
- Naturschnitzel - cutlet without breading; you may see also Pariser Schnitzel (egg-based coating) or Jäger Schnitzel (with mushrooms)
- Schweinsbraten - roast pork [Schwein = pig]; you may also see Zwiebelrostbraten, pork roast with onions
- Pute - turkey, increasingly popular in Europe as a healthier replacement of pork, also called Truthahn
- Goulash - much better in Austria than in the US, made from pork or beef [Rind]
- Hendl - roast chicken, very popular in Austria, ususally inexpensive
- Käsespätzle - small noodles [Spätzle], baked with ham and cheese
- Berner Würstl - sausages similar to hot dogs [Frankfurter], with cheese and bacon
- Cevapcici - spicy grilled ground beef, one of many dishes with a Slavic origin; also popular is Rasnici (spicy lamb)
Side dishes (Beilagen) and Salads (Salate)
- Bratkartoffeln - fried potatoes; also popular are Pommes frites (French fries)
- Knödel - dumpling, the most popular of which are Semmelknödel, made from bread [Semmel = roll]
- Frühlingsgemüse - spring vegetables, typically peas (Erbsen) and carrots (Karotten)
- Gemischter Salat - the normal salad in Austria, which will include lettuce but also beans, carrots, other mixed vegetables; if you want just a lettuce salad, that is a grüner Salat
- Kartoffelsalat - potato salad, not made with mayo
