The second of two newsletters provided by the Department of Foreign Languages faculty to student majors is available for viewing online at www.has.vcu.edu/for/student_assess_news2.htm. This newsletter focuses on portfolios and assessment.

The Department will shortly be soliciting applications for the Sheridan and Stackhouse Scholarships. Students should check with their advisor or instructor and on the Scholarship link under Student Information for further details. Students who are planning to study abroad in Summer 2003 or during 2003-04 should check out scholarships available through the Office of International Education. Upcoming Lecture:
Dr. Thomas Bonfiglio, Professor of German at the University of Richmond, will deliver a lecture on Thursday afternoon, February 27, on the topic of his recently published book. The title of his talk is "The Influence of Race Consciousness on the Pronunciation of American English." Exact time and place TBA.

Foreign Language Placement Tests for French, German, and Spanish have been computerized. Final testing for the Spring Semester will be in the Language Lab (Hibbs 424) on January 15 and 16 at 12 and 1 p.m. The next regularly scheduled testing will be during the advance registration period in March.

Language and Identity Lecture Series

During the 2000-2001 academic year, we offered a spectacular lecture series, Language & Identity: Word, Sound and Image, featuring notable guests from the world over.  

Interested in Study Abroad?

Study abroad programs offer opportunities for short-term immersion in the language and culture of other countries. We offer summer programs to Canada, Guatemala, Mexico, Spain and Italy, and through the European Heritage Institute, Austria and France. VCU is a member of the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) which offers a junior year abroad at one of 40 universities worldwide. Exchange Programs such as the MBA exchange with a French Business School in Marseilles, opened to students combining studies in foreign languages and business, will allow you to gain more knowledge in your field while discovering fascinating places!.
