Forensic science is the application
of scientific methods and analysis of scientific data
to support the law. Students learn the theory and practice
of forensic science, including the nature and scope
of the discipline; the application of forensic science
to crime, police investigation and the adjudication
process; and the legal, ethical, natural science, mathematical
and laboratory skills required for forensic work.
The Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science degree provides
students with a solid education preparing them for effective
professional careers in forensic laboratories, public
and private, basic research laboratories, clinical laboratories,
and/or to pursue graduate studies. Students also will
be prepared to pursue advanced degrees in the physical
sciences, biological sciences, forensic science, law,
allied health and medicine, to name a few. Students will
have a breadth of knowledge provided by a liberal arts
approach to the discipline and by hands-on experience
in the laboratory. They will be exposed to principles
of forensic chemistry, forensic molecular biology, microscopy
and other criminalistic examinations. Students also will
learn the importance of the scientific analysis of physical
evidence and its place in a justice system setting.
