Panel Schedule

Thursday, November 21, Special Exhibits

11:00 a.m.-3:15 p.m.

Study & Work Abroad Opportunities (Capital Ballroom A)

Organizer: Jennifer Ludovici, Acting Director, VCU Study Abroad

Ever dreamed of broadening your horizons?  Drop in to see how far some VCU students have gone.  They’ll share photos, mementos, souvenirs, and stories from their studies abroad. Come see how international experience enhances almost any field. Shalonda Brooks, VCU graduate and returned Peace Corps Volunteer, will also be on hand to discuss the challenges and opportunities in the Peace Corps.

12:30 p.m.-3:15 p.m.

Video Screening Room (Capital Ballroom D)

Two new original videos by Claudia Ferman, PhD, University of Richmond:

12:30 p.m. LA VOZ DE RIGOBERTA, NIETA DE LOS MAYAS.

This video deals with the last two publications by Menchú: "La nieta de los mayas" (1998), y "Li M'in, una niña de Chimel" (2000).  The video examines how Rigoberta's voice is expressed in "dictated" or collaborative texts, the contents of that voice, and the movement that converts it into writing. 20 mins.  In Spanish.

1:00 p.m. EL CONTINENTE McCONDO.

This video explores new trends in contemporary Latin American literature through interviews with three writers of the new generation: Alberto Fuguet, Sergio Gomez (Chile) and Mariana Enriquez (Argentina).  The writers discuss the radical change in the cultural settings, relations between culture and globalization and the debates to which their writings are committed.  20 mins.  In Spanish.

 1:30-3:30 pm.

VCU Libraries shares something new in their collection of videos on themes of crucial importance today.  Life:  A Series about Globalization provides glimpses from around the world illustrating how international economics exert a powerful impact on individual lives.  Many thanks to Media Librarians Nell Chenault and Anita Williams!  You can browse these and other titles of interest at:

www.library.vcu.edu/jbc/govdocs/091101.html

1:30 Geraldo Off-Line (Life:  A Series about Globalization)

The financial meltdown in South East Asia puts Geraldo De Sousa out of work at a Ford factory worker in San Paulo, Brazil.  Is this just an excuse, or is this the harsh reality of the globalized economy?  (24 min.)

2:00 The Boxer (Life:  A Series about Globalization)

Follow Luis as he travels north to the US to realize his dream of becoming a boxer.  He leaves a remote peasant village of southern Mexico.  He must outwit the US border guards and try to integrate into US society. (24 min.)

2:30 All Different, All Equal (Life:  A Series about Globalization)

This is a five year follow-up to the Beijing Conference on Women.  What progress toward pledged decrease in violence toward women have been made in Brazil, Britain, Fiji, Ireland, Lithuania, Mexico, and South Africa?  (24 min.)

3:00 Bolivian Blues (Life:  A Series about Globalization)

Poverty, malnutrition and illiteracy hampers foreign investment in Bolivia.    This program explores initiatives to coordinate donor agencies and focus aid on reducing poverty.  (24 min.)
