Latin American Studies Minor
(18 credits)
The Latin American Studies Minor requires completion of 18
credits drawn from a list of approved courses, with at least 12 credits taken at the
300/400 level.
No more than nine credit hours can be taken in any one
discipline, and a minimum of three must be taken in each of three areas:

1) art and literature
2) history and civilization
3) the social sciences
Students are required to complete Spanish or Portuguese
through the intermediate level (201 and 202 or 205), and these two courses may be used as
part of the 18 credits of the minor.
Native and heritage speakers of Spanish and Portuguese
should be advised, however, that the Department of Foreign Languages does not allow them
to enroll in Spanish or Portuguese 201 or 202, respectively. In this case,
appropriate language courses at the 300 and 400 level may be substituted.
Students are strongly recommended to
complete third year Spanish (300, 301, 321, 331).
Students are urged to complete a study abroad experience of at least
one month in Latin America.
