News alert services

Here are e-mail services and a personalized Web-page service that will deliver news to you. They provide another way to keep up with what's happening in state government.

VA News

News stories from across the state, compiled into a daily e-mail by Tom Whipple, husband of Sen. Mary Margaret Whipple, D-Arlington. (The clippings are remarkably comprehensive and seem to be nonpartisan.)

To subscribe, send an e-mail to:

VCOG-FOI-Alert

Daily e-mails from the Virginia Coalition for Open Government. VCOG closely monitors the General Assembly, often for Freedom of Information bills but also for other legislation. The e-mails also summarize news stories about the First Amendment and other issues.

To subscribe, send a blank e-mail message to:

vcog-foi-alert-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

VPAP Updates

Alerts from the Virginia Public Access Project, which maintains a Web site on campaign finance, including a searchable database of donations. VPAP notifies interested parties when the data has been updated or features have been added to the site.

To subscribe, e-mail David Poole, the executive director of VPAP, at:

dpoole@vpap.org

Ask Poole to add you to the distribution list.

Governor's Update

News releases from Gov. Tim Kaine's office. Worth skimming for briefs; also, you will receive a schedule of Kaine's public appearances. To subscribe, go to:

http://www.governor.virginia.gov/MediaRelations/GovernorsUpdate/subscribe.cfm

Stateline.org News Alerts

Stories from Stateline.org, a Pew-funded Web site devoted to state-government news. Some of the stories are produced by Stateline's staff; Stateline also links to stories by other media. Stateline is an excellent source for finding story ideas and putting stories into a national context. Stateline also buys stories from freelancers. To subscribe to Stateline's News Alerts, go to:

http://www.stateline.org

On the lefthand side of each page, you'll see a link to "Sign Up for Free News Alerts." Then you can fill out a form to get the alerts by e-mail.

My Virginia home page and bill tracking

Another excellent way to keep up with General Assembly news is to create a personalized "My Virginia" home page at:

www.myvirginia.org

After you create your page, click on the link to "Personalize Your Page." The "Update channels and links" option allows you to specify up to 20 bills that the Web site will track for you. Every time you return to your "My Virginia" page, you will see the latest status of these bills and can drill down for more detail.

You can also set your page to link to press releases from various state agencies.
