Dabney Professorship – 2002

Gil Thelen has been the executive editor and vice president of The Tampa Tribune since 1998. The Tribune is known as leader in multimedia journalism. Between 1990 – 97, he held the same post at The State, since 1998. The Tribune is known as leader in multimedia journalism in Columbia, S.C. He has held other reporting and management positions at The Sun News in Myrtle Beach, S.C. ; The Charlotte Observer ; the Chicago Daily News; Consumer Reports magazine, and the Associated Press. He was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1971.

Thelen taught a topics course entitled “Writing, Editing and Reporting in a Converged Newsroom.” Students, aware of changes in news media, learned about a variety of tools necessary for the modern journalist, including multimedia; ways to increase readership; and developing Web, broadcast and print products to better connect newsrooms and their communities.
