Technology Labs
The School of Mass Communications has the technology you need to prepare for a communications career.
Desktop computers offer access to the Internet. Digital imaging, scanning technology and the latest software allow creative graphics production and electronic pagination. Electronic publishing software enables the creation of work that mixes audio, video, graphics and text information. Facilities include computer labs for news writing and graphic design and video/audio bays for electronic media production.

MAC Labs
Room 1148 contains:
- 16 24” IMacs with Intel processors
- 2 17” IMacs with Intel processors (Scan stations)
- 1 24" IMac w/Intel processors (Instructors station)
- 1 17" IMac w/Intel processors (Lab Monitor station)
Room 1140 contains:
- 16 20” IMac G5’s
- 1 17"’ IMac w/ Intel processors (Scan Station)
- 1 20” IMac G5 (Instructors Station)
All of the Apple computers are connected via a Apple OS X Server, so that student work is secure.
PC Labs
The School of Mass Communications operates four PC labs. On average there are 20 Dell GX280’s in each lab. All the labs are networked over a 100mb Ethernet system, and have networked printers.
Video Shooting & Editing
There are two video edit suites
- Room 1149 contains:
- 6 Dell XPS computers.
- 6 32’ Dell Monitors
- Capture Hardware for each station
Room 1118A contains:
- 2 Dell XPS Computers
- 2 32’ Dell Monitors
- Capture Hardware for each station
These are the primary capture and edit stations for VCU’s InSight program.
Cameras:
- Students shoot video on six Sony XDCam PDW-510 Cameras. These are professional broadcast cameras.
- Students in MASC 366 (Basic Video productions course) shoot on three Sony BetaCam-SP UVW100 cameras.
All field equipment has professional support gear, including batteries, tripods, lights equipment bags etc.
Audio Editing
Two Audio Edit Bays contain Harris Impusle Digital Consoles, along with appropriate support equipment. These are professional ON-Air Consoles used in radio. Students edit on Adobe Audition.
