Assistant or Associate Professor, Broadcast Journalism

Description:  The School of Mass Communications at Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking two broadcast journalism faculty members at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.  Both positions are contingent upon funding. 

Position #1

The first is tenure eligible.  Primary teaching assignments will include broadcast skills classes such as writing and reporting, and television newscast production.  The ideal candidate will have teaching experience, a record of research and/or creative activity and professional experience in broadcast or multimedia journalism.

Qualifications:  Master’s degree, professional experience and a record of research and scholarly publication (or demonstrated capacity to develop such a scholarly record).  The ideal candidate will have, in addition, a PhD as well as teaching experience. 

Position #2

The second, depending on the successful applicant’s qualifications, is either tenure eligible, or collateral with the expectation of ongoing contract renewal with satisfactory performance.  Primary teaching assignments will include broadcast skills classes such as reporting, audio and video newsgathering, and video production.  The ideal candidate will have teaching experience, a record of research and/or creative activity and professional experience in broadcast or multimedia journalism.  Collateral faculty performance would be assessed based on a record of teaching and service.  Tenure-eligible faculty would have the additional expectation of research and/or creative activity.   

Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree and extensive professional experience in broadcast or multimedia journalism, preferably with strong video newsgathering and editing skills, required for a collateral appointment.  Master’s degree, professional experience and a record of research and creative activity (or demonstrated capacity to develop such a scholarly record) required for tenure eligible appointment.  The ideal candidate for the tenure-eligible appointment will have, in addition, a PhD as well as teaching experience.   

The individuals hired for these positions will join an undergraduate and graduate journalism program that emphasizes multimedia and prepares students to work across platforms.  In all courses taught, the faculty member would reflect the School’s commitment to diversity as a fundamental component of high quality journalism.

Description:  The School of Mass Communications at Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking two advertising faculty members at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.  Both positions are contingent on funding.

The first position is tenure eligible and in our strategic track.  He or she will teach courses in both of the School’s undergraduate tracks: creative and strategic.  However, primary teaching assignments will be in strategic advertising courses such as account planning (Awareness), media (Ubiquity) and campaigns (Completeness). 

Qualifications:  Master’s degree, professional experience and a record of research and scholarly publication (or demonstrated capacity to develop such a scholarly record).  The ideal candidate will have, in addition, a PhD as well as teaching experience. 

Position #2

The second position is in our creative track.  Depending on the successful applicant’s qualifications, it is either tenure eligible, or collateral with the expectation of ongoing contract renewal with satisfactory performance.  He or she will teach courses in both of the School’s undergraduate tracks:  creative and strategic.  However, primary teaching assignments will be in advertising creative courses such as copywriting (Perspicuousness), Story, Style and Invention.   The ideal candidate will have teaching experience, a record of research and/or creative activity and professional experience in creative advertising.  Collateral faculty performance would be assessed based on a record of teaching and service.  Tenure-eligible faculty would have the additional expectation of research and/or creative activity.

Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree and extensive professional experience in advertising, preferably as a copywriter, art director or other member of a creative advertising team, required for a collateral appointment.  Master’s degree, professional experience and a record of research and creative activity (or demonstrated capacity to develop such a scholarly record) required for tenure eligible appointment.  The ideal candidate for a tenure-eligible appointment will have, in addition, a PhD as well as teaching experience. 

The individuals hired for these positions will join an undergraduate advertising program that will introduce a cutting-edge curriculum in 2008-2009 and whose students consistently win top national awards, go on to top-ranked graduate programs and/or successfully enter the job market.  In all courses taught, the faculty member would reflect the School’s commitment to diversity as an important quality in media messages.  The ideal candidate will have teaching experience, a record of research and a record of national professional experience in advertising.
