2008 Urban Journalism Workshop

The Richmond Times-Dispatch and VCU's School of Mass Communications are partnering to sponsor the 2008 Virginia Urban Journalism Workshop. This two-week intensive residential workshop is especially for high school students interested in journalism and will take place on June 15-27 on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.
In addition to the Richmond Times-Dispatch and the School of Mass Communications, other sponsors include the national Dow Jones Newspaper Fund and the Virginia Press Association. Because of this generous sponsorship, the workshop is offered free to participants at no cost. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about writing, editing, design, graphics and career opportunities in an important field.
In years past, these programs were titled "High School Journalism Workshops for Minorities." This criterion has changed. There will be no preferential treatment for, or discrimination against, any applicant on the basis of race or ethnicity this year or in the future. All applicants, regardless of race, ethnicity, or other protected trait are welcome to apply and will be considered for participation without reference to their race, ethnicity or other protected trait.
To apply, students must complete and mail the application, write a short essay, provide two letters of recommendation and have a transcript mailed directly to the UJW Director.
