The
VCU Physics Department and the Science Museum of Virginia jointly hosted
the fall meeting of the Chesapeake Section of the American Association
of Physics Teachers on the 16th and 17th of November. The keynote
address was given by Dr. Kathryn Thornton, Assistant Dean at the University
of Virginia School of Engineering and former NASA Shuttle Mission Specialist
with the inspiring talk: “Space Flight – A Human Perspective”. The conference
was attended by about 80 people, having 33 presentations in three parallel
sessions. Also there were 9 poster presentations that have been presented
in a videoconference style, with the host site at the Cabell Library, and
the remote site at the High Education Center in Abingdon. The conference
was well received. Professor Ron Reese, of Washington and Lee University
who participated at the conference, notes: “ You and your colleagues at
VCU did a spectacular job organizing and hosting the meeting – and set
a standard that will be difficult to beat”.
