Dr. Bijan K. Rao died on May 7, 2004 from pneumonia while recovering from a cardiac arrest suffered in February. His death at age 61 came as a great shock to everyone in the department. Dr. Rao had been at Virginia Commonwealth University since 1984. During his time with us he served for three years as Department Chair (1992-1995) and was, at all times, devoted to the welfare of his students and his colleagues. His own research spanned the fields of physics, chemistry, and biology and resulted in over 150 published journal articles. He helped organize many of the international conferences that our department has become known for. Most recently, he served as treasurer of the International Symposium on Clusters and Nano-Assemblies, which drew top researchers from around the world. In 1964, Dr. Rao received his M. Sc degree in physics from Utkal University in India. He was the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship in 1966 and received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California at Riverside in 1971. He was a research associate at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge from 1970 to 1971. He then returned to India as a Senior Lecturer at R. E. College in Rourkela from 1971 to 1975. From 1975 until 1984 he was first a lecturer and then an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Physics in Bhubaneswar. During this time he returned several times to the United States as a Visiting Professor, at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge from 1978 to 1980 and again in 1982, and finally as a Visiting Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1984. He was hired as an Associate Professor at VCU in 1985. Dr. Rao was a good physicist and a good friend. We all miss him. |
