Mr. August R. Buchhalter
is a doctoral candidate in VCU’s Department of Psychology (Biopsychology).
His research involves physiological and associative factors that
influence tobacco/nicotine dependence and withdrawal.
More specifically, August’s research has been useful in characterizing
symptoms of tobacco cigarette withdrawal in a laboratory setting.
Additionally, components of this research have been instrumental in
establishing a methodology used in evaluating the acute effects of novel smoking
systems. August’s current
research study and doctoral dissertation project examines the extent to which
cigarette smokers are physically dependent on nicotine, the duration of
withdrawal suppression induced by non-nicotine, tobacco-related factors (i.e.,
denicotinized cigarettes), and whether men and women differ in their response to
the nicotine/tobacco withdrawal syndrome.
Alison Breland is a second-year, pre-doctoral graduate student
in VCU's Biopsychology program. She has current interests in novel smoking
systems as well as gender differences in smoking cessation and the effects of
nicotine/tobacco.
