Graduate Handbook for Biopsychology, 2008 [PDF]

Specific training goals

  1. To provide students with training in biopsychology and learning and cognition, including, but not limited to, neuroanatomy, behavioral pharmacology, animal learning and behavior, human learning and cognition, psychophysiology, motivation, and sensation and perception.

  2. To provide training and experiences for students as scientists and teachers. All graduate students are expected to maintain an active research program (in addition to the thesis and dissertation) during their graduate career by working closely with a faculty member(s). Also, students are encouraged to seek graduate teaching assistantships for undergraduate laboratories or courses or other teaching opportunities that arise. The development of these skills is necessary for graduate students to become successful scientists and/or teachers.

  3. To provide continuous encouragement and opportunities throughout the students’ education for the development of research skills. By developing a research collaboration with a mentor during their graduate career, students will acquire many research skills. Biopsychology graduate students also are required to take a research methods course in Biopsychology.

  4. To provide students with the training and experience necessary to help them develop skills for communicating psychological information. Through presentations in graduate seminars and at scientific meetings (local or national) and publication of research, graduate students are expected to develop the necessary skills to communicate psychological information effectively.

  5. To assist students in developing a sense of professional identity by participation in departmental and other professional activities and societies. Graduate students are expected to participate in departmental and program activities such as colloquia, serving on committees, etc. Students also are expected to present their research findings at local and national meeting.
