Program mission statement: Innovation is our tradition

Our training model is a scientist-practitioner-leader model. Scientific psychology is the basis of our training in preparing scientists, leaders and professionals for functioning effectively within the community and the profession of counseling psychology. Our faculty and graduate students are characterized by excellence, innovation and forward thinking. The Counseling Psychology Program at VCU strives to be the leader among counseling psychology programs in the areas of community and counseling health psychology. In line with our motto, “Innovation is our tradition,” the program seeks to advance the field of counseling psychology through interdisciplinary approaches to science and service provision while upholding the core traditions of counseling psychology.
Our program emphasizes three strengths in particular:

  • health psychology.
  • community-based interventions and development of life skills.
  • multicultural training and research.

APA accreditation

Our program has been fully accredited by the American Psychological Association since 1984. Our last APA site visit was in the fall of 2006.  Our next APA site visit is scheduled for 2011.
