The Center for Psychological Services and Development offers psychological
services to the Richmond community as well as the university community.
These services include individual, couples, group and family therapy,
vocational counseling, psychodiagnostics for children, adolescents,
and adults, and career assessment.
Counseling can be an effective way to alleviate distress, discover
better ways to solve problems, learn new ways of relating to others,
or to change long-term behavior problems.
However, counseling also may involve the risk of remembering unpleasant
events and may arouse other emotions, which may affect you and how
you relate to others. Likewise, career services can be used to help
individuals identify vocational areas that match their interests,
abilities and values or to help one with career decisions.
In many cases, career difficulties affect other areas beyond the
workplace (for example, relationship problems at home or with friends).
In these cases, career counseling can be used to help discover ways
to improve both work and personal interests.
During your intake evaluation, the staff clinician will explain
our policies and services, and answer any questions you have. You
will be contacted after this session regarding your eligibility
for services at CPSD. If we are not able to serve you, we will assist
you with a referral to an alternative community service or professional.
