Victoria A. ShivyAssociate professor Contact informationPhone: (804) 828-0294 EducationPh.D. (1994), University at Albany, State University of New York Program affiliationResearch and clinical interestsMy substantive research interests are focused around achieving an understanding of how individuals perceive occupations and career-related stimuli, and how individuals make sense of the role that work plays in their lives. I have particular interests in understanding how occupational perceptions develop and change across the lifespan, and the degree to which they vary as a function of select demographic, cognitive and socioemotional variables. More recently I have become interested in the intersection of health and vocational psychology – specifically in the impact of unhealthy workplace experiences and behaviors (e.g., compulsive work; bullying, or ‘mobbing,’ in the workplace). In terms of more applied research interests I help people, young and old, with career decision-making and career-related transitions. I developed a career-related reentry intervention that has been used in the Virginia correctional system for close to 10 years now. This intervention focuses not only on career information and career choice, but also the socioemotional aspects of returning to work. With regard to clinical work, I am a generalist. I also value psychological assessment activities (personality, career-related, and intellectual assessment) to the extent that they enhance diagnostic and therapeutic efforts.
