Research and teaching

Dr. Finn in his labThe faculty of the College of Humanities and Sciences are expected to promote excellence in teaching, scholarship and service, as well as academic freedom of thought, teaching, learning, inquiry and expression.

We encourage our faculty to pursue these advancements in knowledge through research, instruction, published works and participation in College lecture series and conferences. Staff members in the College’s office of the dean and the Office of Grants Administration are available to help faculty identify sources of funding for research from corporate and foundation partners and sponsored programs and navigate the proposal process for securing funds.

Faculty members who contribute successfully to the intellectual development of the VCU community and meet the standards of the university may be eligible for appointment, promotion and tenure within the College. Through peer evaluations, we strive to ensure faculty performance while protecting the rich blend of unique talents and diverse accomplishments that constitute the core of the College and the university. Faculty members who best exemplify our commitment to learning and discovery may also receive recognition for their academic and professional achievements through our annual awards program.
