If you’re interested in applying to external funding agencies for research support, contact the College of Humanities and Sciences’ Office of Grants Administration. We’ll help you complete internal forms and navigate the proposal process. Our administration team is also available to meet with new and senior faculty members who need further assistance with electronic submissions or preparing a proposal application.

The College’s Office of Grants Administration can help you in your search for research support from external funding agencies.

To begin your search, visit the VCU Office of Research Web site for information on funding sources, including internal sources, non-federal sources, nonprofit foundations and award databases.

Submitting proposals

The following steps are required when submitting a proposal. For more information, we encourage faculty members to schedule an appointment to review the entire grant proposal process by contacting Sharon Dawson at sjdawson@vcu.edu.

  1. After completing the proposal, attach a completed copy of the VCU Internal Approval Form [PDF document] (the “green sheet”) from the Office of Research’s Sponsored Programs Web site and submit the entire package to the department chair for review and approval.
  2. Once the chair has signed the approval form, submit the entire package to Dawson, on the second floor of Blanton House, who will review the package for compliance with VCU and agency policies. Once the proposal has been signed by the dean’s designee, the faculty member will be notified. You should allow at least five days for this process.
  3. The dean’s office representative will submit the entire package, with approval signatures, to the Office of Sponsored Programs Administration for review and approval. Once the approval has been granted, the faculty member will be notified. You should allow at least five days for this process.

Post-award administration

The College’s Office of Grants Administration is also responsible for overseeing post-award administration and assisting departments at the College. We provide assistance with budget reallocation, setting up spreadsheets, answering post-award questions and interpreting rules and regulations. We offer assistance with no-cost extension requests, carry forward requests and inquires from the sponsor, as necessary.
