Curriculum

The certificate curriculum requires 18 credit hours and emphasizes four core areas:

1. Knowledge of Gender Violence Intervention (focus on causes, consequences, demographic characteristics of both victims and perpetrators, legal and policy issues, special populations)
3 hours - Theorizing Gender Violence (SOCY 635)
3 hours - Sexual and Domestic Violence in Social Context (SOCY 510)
3 hours - One elective from the following options:

  • Sociology of Women (SOCY 660)
  • Epidemiology and Prevention of Intentional Injury (PMCH 619)
  • Application of the Policy Process to Issues of Violence (SOCY 633)
  • Battered Women in the Criminal Justice System (SOCY 631)
  • Seminar in the Sociology of Deviant Behavior (SOCY 612)

2. Research/Evaluation
3 hours - Advanced Methods of Social Research (SOCY 601)

3. Nonprofit Management ( specific skills include fundraising/grant writing, working with boards, budget management)
3 hours - Principles of Nonprofit Management (PADM 651)

4. Applied Internship
3 hours - Internship in Sexual and Domestic Violence (SOCY 593)
