CGVI Student Classifications and Tracks

Students enrolled in the CGVI will be identified by two classifications:

Novices:
•  Those new to the area of sexual and domestic violence who are seeking a terminal master's degree as a prerequisite for entry into this field. Undergraduate students majoring in sociology, social work, women's studies, and criminal justice would be likely target populations among those who may not yet be working in the field.

Practitioners:
•  Those currently working in the field who seek to broaden their skills and obtain job-related knowledge and expertise through either a graduate certificate or Master's of Science degree. These might include managers, executive directors, and other advocates of public programs, such as victims' assistance programs, who are in regular contact with sexual and domestic violence issues.

•  Those currently working in the field who seek to specialize and/or work in some other area of the system. For example, counselors, social workers, advocates and other victims' services and sexual and domestic violence practitioners who are seeking program management or director roles.

They may also choose from the following two tracks:

Certificate-only:
•  These students will earn the 18 credit hours required for the certificate.

Certificate in conjunction with a graduate degree:
•  These students will earn the certificate in the course of earning the graduate degree in Sociology or another program at VCU.
