Daphne L Rankin (M.S., Virginia Commonwealth University) Bird House, room 301 Specialty AreasHuman sexuality, AIDS, family studies Biographical Sketch Ms. Rankin received her M.S. degree in Sociology from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1988 and a B.A. deree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1976. She began teaching human sexuality at VCU in January 1989. Her areas of expertise at that time were human sexuality and family studies. In 1992, Ms. Rankin developed an undergraduate course on AIDS entitled AIDS: Myths and Realities. This course was introduced in January 1993 and was the first full-semester undergraduate course on AIDS in the state of Virginia.Ms. Rankin has developed an AIDS education program for parents. This peer education program entitled Parents Educating Parents is designed to train parents who serve as both AIDS educators and resource persons for their communities. Ms. Rankin presented her parent education ideas at the XI International Conference on AIDS in Vanncouver, B.C., in July 1996. In November 1995, Ms. Rankin received a joint appointment between VCU's HIV/AIDS Center and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. She was named Assistant Director of the HIV/AIDS Center and Project Director of the Mid-Atlantic AIDS Education and Training Center. Ms. Rankin is currently serving as the Acting Director of the HIV/AIDS Center. Each semester she continues to teach Human Sexuality and AIDS: Myths and Realities on the academic campus. |
