The Crossings Church was founded by Pastor Josh Karrer, a former a staff-member of the National Community Church in Washington D.C. that consists of a congregation of mostly young adults in their twenties and thirties. In August, 2006, Karrer and his wife moved to the Richmond area to further the movement, forming “The Brand Spanking New Church.” Within a short time they had gathered a congregation, and on October 15, 2006 the Crossings Church was born. The congregation initially held monthly services; by Easter 2007 they were holding weekly services. In the fall of 2007 the Crossings Church had its first public service. The Crossings Church is non-denominational with an evangelical, Gospel style. The church’s name is intended to communicate that the church is not a building or an organization but rather “an organism that lives at the intersection of life” and that the lives of its members cross paths with those who are not yet followers of Jesus.
The Crossings Church holds weekly services on Sunday mornings in a relaxed, casual environment. On the second Sunday of the month the congregation meets at the Regal Theaters at Virginia Center Commons; every other Sunday services are held at the home of one of the members. One of the fundamental aspects is that they didn’t want to be a Church that was structured on being confined to four walls of a building, they wanted to be part of the community that is why they hold services at the Regal Cinemas, and so they meet in a public marketplace. The Crossings Church supports many extracurricular or community outreach programs as well as offering services within the church, such as child care. The members meet at various times during the week for other activities like ice cream socials, retreats, and super bowl parties. Membership in the Crossings Church is primarily young adults, and there are approximately two dozen members.

The Crossings Church is based on the idea that church should be fun! According to the church this means that religion should be creative, meaningful, relational, and relevant. As they put it, “Where questions are safe to be asked and church is meant to be enjoyed.” The Crossings Church describes itself as serving the community with fun, relevant services, and relationships that have local as well as global impacts. Their purpose is to serve God through worship, serving others with understanding and action by the word of God. Within this context the church accepts mainline Christian tenets: the Trinity, Humanity, The Holy Spirit, The Church, and The End, with Jesus as the core.
