Velocity Christian Church Velocity Christian Church opened March 9, 2006 as a “plant” church of the Virginia Evangelizing Fellowship. Unlike most churches, the Sunday services are held in a movie theater. The Sunday morning service begins with music from a rock band playing Christian songs for praise and worship. The pre-recorded sermon comes either from Community Christian Church in Chicago or Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Kentucky and is projected on the movie screen. It is also the belief of those with Velocity that its unconventional style of worship and teaching has the potential to reach those who might not have been as receptive to other church environments. Aside from a sermon on a movie screen, other practices that are characteristic of this church are impromptu dramas, interviews, and small group activities. These practices are meant to help the member or visitor feel less like a “spectator” and more like a “participant.”
Velocity has nearly 200 current members, most of them coming from the surrounding suburbs. There is no dress code for the service, and childcare is offered for children over three months.
