Mark Wood, PhD

Wood is coordinator and associate professor of Religious Studies and jointly appointed in African American Studies, in the School of World Studies, VCU. Dr Wood is co-chair of the “Life Sciences and Religion Community Forum of Central Virginia”, a Local Societies Initiative-funded program. Dr Wood teaches courses in the history of religions in the Americas and courses that explore the relationships between religious traditions, globalization, ecology, and human rights. His research work on race, class, religion, and philosophy includes his book, Cornel West and the Politics of Prophetic Pragmatism (2000). He has also written on the ethics of education and the importance of education for democratic globalization, including “The Science and Religion Dialogue: At the Heart of Humanistic Education and Global Development”, presented at the Metanexus 2005 conference. Dr Wood teaches courses in the Social Justice Studies track in the International Studies program and co-teaches the “Faith and Life Sciences” course. He has led students on study abroad programs to Cuba and to Perugia, Italy. He is also working on developing partnerships and programs with colleagues from the University of Messina in Sicily.
