Tarynn M. Witten, PhD,
MSW, FGSA, FCSBC

Witten is an Associate Professor of Biological Complexity, Senior Fellow, and Director of Research and Development at the VCU Center for the Study of Biological Complexity. She also holds appointments in Emergency Medicine, Gerontology, Social Work, and Biostatistics. Witten obtained her A.B. (mathematics and physics, magna cum laude) at Boston University. After receiving an M.S. in mathematical physics at Indiana University Bloomington she obtained an M.S. and Ph.D. in mathematical biology/medicine at SUNY at Buffalo, Center for Theoretical Biology. Witten organized the First World Congress on Computational Medicine, Biology, and Public Health. She has also served as Chief Information Officer of the University of Michigan Medical Center’s Comprehensive Gender Services Program. Her research interests lie in the study of aging processes at all levels of biological organization including epidemiological and public health issues in minority populations and aging and life-span health of stigmatized minority persons. Her books include The Tao of Gender (2001).
