New Web Site for up-to-the-minute info on open classes

The VCU Reporting Center has developed a Web site that gives faculty advisors, students and everyone else timely updates of what specific course sections are open during registration periods. To go directly to the site, click here. Using the tab key, complete the required information according to the screen instructions. This provides the number of seats available in each section of any given course. The tallies give the latest information available through the student information system. Advisees will find this a particularly useful planning tool in creating student schedules.

From the Undergraduate Affairs Office

It is estimated that over one-third of the applications submitted have had one or more problems that could, in some cases, result in students not being permitted to graduate. Below is a compiled list of the top 10 common graduation problems found with students' applications.

  1. Incorrect courses were used to fulfill general education requirements (i.e., courses taken were not on the approved list).
  2. Minor applications were not attached to the graduation application.
  3. Students in the Extended Teacher Preparation Program lacked the minimum number of credit hours (160 or 156 depending on catalog year) to graduate.
  4. The foreign language requirement was not completed.
  5. Student, advisor or department chairperson signatures were missing on the graduation application.
  6. A waiver of the requirement that the last 30 credits be earned in residence at VCU was not filed or approved.
  7. Two writing intensive courses were not taken.
  8. Students did not complete 45 credit hours of upper-level courses.
  9. Repeated or duplicate courses were counted twice in students' records resulting in insufficient number of total credit hours earned.
  10. The computer literacy exam for the new general education course was not taken.

Taking a course at another institution

Four steps should be followed by students who plan to take a course over the summer (or any other time) at another college or university.

  1. The student must complete the Request to Take Courses at Another Institution form.
  2. Advisors should check to see if the course is transferable to VCU. The Transfer Guide offers some relevant information.
  3. Advisors should also find out whether the student is currently in the last 25 percent of the credit semester hours required toward a degree. If students are in the last 25 percent of degree requirements, they should call (804) 828-2333 for petition information.
  4. Finally, remind the student that he or she is responsible for having one transcript from the other institution sent to Records and Registration at VCU.
