In addition to the major, a student may select a minor area
of concentration in any program or department offering such
a program. The minor can be used to fulfill career needs.
It also serves as a means for students to study a discipline
of interest. There are about 50 possible minors at VCU. Like
majors, these programs can be broken down according to areas
of interest.

Students who want to declare or change a major must now meet with an official representative from the college or school administering that program of study. Students interested in changing their major should:
- carefully review the requirements and prerequisites for the new major and
- discuss the reasons why you want to declare this major
For majors in the College of Humanities and Sciences, students must contact the Office of Academic Advising to schedule an appointment. Students can schedule an appointment by either going to 701 W. Grace St. or calling (804) 828-2333.

"Undeclared" is the most common status for first-year students
at VCU. However, students cannot graduate with an undeclared
status and we recommend students to try several strategies
to help in selecting a program of study. It is required that
students declare a major by the completion of 60 credit hours.
For assistance refer to Ten
Tips to Select a Major.

There are several places to find available career opportunities.
Faculty advisors are often a great source for knowing what
recent graduates are doing and what opportunities exist for
students. Also, students should check the Undergraduate
Bulletin, departmental newsletters and literature, the
Occupational Outlook Handbook, the Internet and University
Career Services. In addition, this Web site has specific information
regarding career opportunities in specific majors.

All pre-health science programs are selective admissions
majors. Students will take prescribed pre-professional courses
and then apply to the program of interest on the MCV Campus
of VCU or at another institution. Pre-health advisors specialize
in helping students understand the requirements and application
processes. For further information contact Dr. Leibowitz,
director of Pre-Health Sciences Advising, at (804) 828-1673,
slleibowitz@vcu.edu.
