Advising for H & S students
First-year H & S students are assigned a specific advisor
in the University College located in Hibbs Hall or they can refer to the Advisors
Web page. To get additional information about advisors, visit
the Advisors page.
Advising for pre-dental hygiene, pre-nursing, pre-occupational
therapy, pre-physical therapy, pre-radiation sciences, pre-medical
and pre-dental programs is available in the Pre-health Sciences
Office, located in Hibbs, Room 208.
After declaring a major and completing their freshman year,
sophomores, juniors and seniors will be assigned a faculty
advisor in the department in which they are majoring. Students
should go to the departmental office of their major to find
out their advisor's name and location.
Sophomores, who have not declared a major by the end of their
freshman year, will continue to be advised by their assigned
professional advisor. Since sophomores are required to declare
a major at the completion of 60 credit hours, they should
work closely with their advisor throughout their sophomore
year to select a major.
Students who are unsure who their advisor is should call
the Office of Academic Advising at (804) 827-UNIV (8648).

Advising benefits
Advisors are knowledgeable about most aspects of the university.
Students can expect advisors to help them:
- Understand their major, general education and graduation
requirements.
- Develop educational plans.
- Monitor academic progress or discuss career goals.
- Interpret academic policies and procedures.
- Explore and select major.
- Select classes for registration.
- Choose courses to take at another institution.
- Answer most university and academic questions.
Advisors are valuable resources. Students who are ever unsure
about what to do or where to go should seek guidance from
their advisor.

Expectations of an advisor
Advisors expect students to take charge of their educational
program as soon as possible and understand important forms
such as graduation worksheets and degree audit reports. Advisors
encourage students to read the beginning and ending pages
of the Schedule
of Classes each semester to be aware of critical dates,
such as registration, financial aid and tuition and fee deadlines,
and the final exam schedule.
Becoming familiar with such substantial information will
result in better relationships between students and advisers
and will help students accomplish their academic goals smoothly.

Scheduling advising appointments
It is recommended that students meet with their advisor at
least once each semester to discuss current classes and to
select classes to register for the approaching semester. However,
first-year students may want to visit their advisor twice
each semester — once in the first few weeks of the semester
and again around registration time.
Freshman or undeclared students should call (804) 827-UNIV (8648),
or e-mail their advisors to schedule an appointment. Sophomores, juniors,
or seniors in a declared major should contact their departmental
office.
