Each of the scholarships listed on this page was made possible by an individual or group dedicated to the rewards of higher education. Through their generosity, the financial burdens of achieving a college education are eased for many students in the College. Many scholarships are specific to a department or major, while some are available to any student in the College of Humanities and Sciences.
If you are interested in applying for a scholarship in the College of Humanities and Sciences please contact the appropriate department. Unless otherwise noted, recipients are determined by departments/committees in February of each year preceding the academic year of the award. Scholarships that require an application are denoted with an asterisk. The amount of each award varies.
Scholarship recipients are asked to participate in stewardship activities that are coordinated by the VCU Foundation and/or the Office of the Dean of the College of Humanities and Sciences. Such activities may include writing a letter of thanks to the donor(s) and attending special functions. Scholarship recipients may be featured in College or University communications.
By policy of the VCU Foundation, endowed scholarships are funded with a minimum of $10,000 and provide financial assistance based on a 5 percent distribution of accrued interest. Current scholarships are funded with contributions that are made on an annual basis during the University’s fiscal year, July 1 – June 30.

The following scholarships are available either through application or award by department or committee within the College of Humanities and Sciences. An asterisk (*) signifies that an application is required.
Dean's Award for Academic Excellence*
Established in 1999 by friends and alumni of the College, this scholarship is awarded to a junior- or senior-level student majoring in an area of study the College of Humanities and Sciences. Eligible candidates must have a GPA of 3.2 or higher.

The Yvonne Engleson Rodriguez Benner Scholarship*
Established by family and friends in honor of Ms. Benner who passed away in August 2001. She was an active and admired member of VCU’s Board of Visitors and an advocate of higher education. The scholarship is awarded based on merit and need to a Hispanic student majoring in journalism, government, English, Latin American studies, international affairs or a related field. The scholarship may be renewed for an additional three years provided the student remains in good academic standing.

Initiatives of the Bersoff Scholarship Funds
Funded with gifts from Dr. Edward Bersoff, a member of the Board of Visitors, this scholarship is awarded to any student within the College of Humanities and Sciences. Bersoff is the chairman and founder of Greenwich Associates, LLC. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from New York University, where he studied mathematics.

The Marika L. Byrd Scholarship*
The Marika L. Byrd Scholarship was established by Ms. Byrd, a graduate of the Nontraditional Studies Program. She served as a member and former president of the Nontraditional Studies Alumni Council at VCU. The Office of the Dean in the College of Humanities and Sciences will award this scholarship to a junior or senior majoring in the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Program. The scholarship will be awarded based on merit. The selected student must have and maintain a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. The scholarship can be renewed for an additional three years provided the student maintains the required GPA and remains in the B.I.S. Program.

Rozanne Garrett Epps Undergraduate Scholarship
Established by friends and Epps family members, this scholarship is named for Rozanne Garrett Epps, former director of evening and off-campus studies, who retired in 1986. The scholarship is administered by the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Program and is intended for adults who return to school after being in the workforce. Juniors and seniors from all undergraduate majors are invited to apply. Selection will be based on need.

April Marie “Sweet” Hart Scholarship*
Friends and family established the April Marie “Sweet” Hart Scholarship in memory of April Marie Hart, an accomplished VCU student who planned to be a first-grade teacher. April passed away June 25, 2003. The recipient will be a student majoring in an area of study within the College of Humanities and Sciences who has a demonstrated interest in gymnastics or cheerleading. Preference will be given to any student who has participated in activities at the East Richmond Gymnastics Center. The student must have and maintain a 3.0 GPA. The award is renewable for an additional one to four years provided the student remains in good academic standing.

Julia Halley Latane Scholarship
In memory of their aunt, Julia Latane, Susan R. Daves and Kate R. Forbes established this scholarship in 1986 for degree-seeking working adults. The scholarship is administered by the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Program and is based on need and academic achievement. Juniors and seniors from all undergraduate majors are eligible.

Phi Kappa Phi Scholarships
Awarded to juniors in B.S. or B.A. College degree programs who have maintained a minimum GPA of 3.6 and earned a minimum of 45 credit hours to apply.

Meadows L. Phillips and Thomas H. Weatherford Veterans Scholarship
The Meadows L. Phillips and Thomas H. Weatherford Veterans Scholarship was established in 2005 through a memorial gift from Mr. and Mrs. David Phillips in memory of his father, Mr. Meadows L. Phillips, and in honor of his cousin, Mr. Thomas H. Weatherford. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time undergraduate or graduate student who has been honorably discharged from one of the U.S. armed forces.

Joan Rexinger Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Undergraduate Scholarship
Daniel M. and Joan (B.G.S ’86) Rexinger established this award in 1997 for full-time and part-time juniors and seniors who have returned to school as adults and have been admitted to the Interdisciplinary Studies Program. Recipients must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Edward E. Willey Scholarship
Established in honor of Sen. Edward A. Willey — member of the Virginia Senate from 1952 – 83 — this scholarship is awarded to a graduate student in the following programs: public administration, criminal justice, urban studies, recreation or rehabilitation counseling. Applicants must be recommended by their respective department chair.

The Smedley Family Scholarship
Established in 2001 by Dr. Audrey Y. Smedley in honor of her parents. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage serious study and research and to support qualified students who have an interest in Africa and/or the African-American experience. The award will be given to a full-time undergraduate student in the African American Studies Program and will be based on merit. The recipient must maintain a 3.0 GPA and not be engaged in full-time employment off-campus. The scholarship may be renewed as long as the student remains in good academic standing.

Charles and LeAnn Blem Scholarship*
Charles and Leann Blem faithfully served VCU as professors in the Department of Biology for more than 30 years. In honor of their retirement, the Blem Scholarship was established by family and friends. It is awarded to a junior or senior who is majoring in biology with specific interest in vertebrates, vertebrate ecology or vertebrate anatomy. The scholarship may also be awarded to a student who has done research in the department of biology with emphasis in those areas; a pre-veterinary or professional student who plans to attend graduate school; or any athletes who are biology majors.

Lewis C. Goldstein Award of Excellence
In 1985, Mrs. Margaret L. May and other friends and colleagues of Lewis Goldstein created this fund in his memory. Dr. Goldstein began working at VCU in 1955 as one of four members of the science department and retired after three decades of association with VCU. This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior biology major based on merit.

The Arthur J. Seidenberg Scholarship
Established by alumni, family, friends, faculty and staff to honor Dr. Seidenberg, assistant dean in the College of Humanities and Sciences, upon his retirement in December 2002. Dr. Seidenberg began his 34-year career at VCU teaching in the department of Biology. The scholarship is awarded to a current pre-medical student who has been recommended by faculty and members of the Pre-medical Advisory Committee and who has been offered a position at a medical school for the upcoming fall semester. Students who entered VCU under the guaranteed admission program in the VCU School of Medicine are not eligible.

Jon and Wendy Baker Award
The Baker award was established in 2000 to honor Jon Baker, who received a B.S. in Biology in 1993 and a B.S. in Chemistry in 1994 and his wife, Wendy. The award provides funding for a deserving student to participate with tutoring summer session students and become involved in a summer research project in the laboratory of a department of Chemistry faculty member.

Gerald and Susan Bass Scholarship
Upon his retirement from the Department of Chemistry in 1998, Dr. R. Gerald Bass and his wife, Susan, established this endowment. The scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate chemistry student based on need or merit.

David F. Ingraham Scholarship
The Richmond Chromatography Discussion Group established this scholarship in memory of one of its members, David F. Ingraham. The scholarship is awarded to a chemistry major entering his/her junior year with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a chemistry GPA of 3.0 and propose to conduct a project in the separation sciences.

James V. Quagliano Fellowship in Chemistry
In memory of Dr. James V. Quagliano, his family established this endowment in 2005. Dr. Quagliano was the husband of Dr. Lidia M. Vallarino Quagliano, professor in the VCU Department of Chemistry. The fellowship is awarded to a Ph.D. candidate in chemistry who has successfully completed his/her cumulative exams.

Albert T. Sneden III Scholarship
The Albert T. Sneden III Scholarship in Chemistry was established by alumni, friends and associates of Dr. Sneden upon his retirement to honor his 28-year career at VCU. Dr. Sneden was the former Executive Associate Dean of the College of Humanities and Sciences and is a Professor Emeritus of the Department of Chemistry. The scholarship is available to qualified undergraduate or graduate students majoring in Chemistry.

Riely Fund Scholarship
Mrs. Jean Roy Riely (B.A. ’81, M.A. ’84) created this fund in 1992. It is awarded to a female, rising junior or senior English major who has completed one full semester and returned to college after a significant absence.

E. Allan Brown Scholarship
To honor E. Allan Brown, chair of the Department of English from 1951 – 1970, friends established this scholarship bearing his name. The scholarship is awarded to an English major in his/her senior year based on merit.

The Emily R. Murphy Scholarship in Forensic Science
This scholarship was established in honor of Ms. Emily Murphy, who lost her life in an automobile accident on Nov. 2, 2002. Murphy, a smart, dedicated student and an inspiration to faculty and students alike, had just begun her graduate studies in the program. The scholarship is awarded each spring to a graduate student in forensic science. The award is based on merit.

Thelma Sara Biddle Scholarship
Established in memory of Dr. Thelma Sara Biddle, who taught in public schools in the Richmond area and then in the Department of History for two decades before being named assistant professor emeritus. This award is given to a full-time junior- or senior-level student majoring in history with the intention of teaching at the middle, secondary or college level.

William E. Blake Scholarship
This scholarship honors Dr. William E. Blake, who taught in the Department of History for 25 years before being named professor emeritus upon his retirement. Dr. Blake joined the University in 1965, when it was called Richmond Professional Institute. He was named associate professor in 1969 and became a full professor in 1977. This merit-based scholarship is awarded to a full-time advanced undergraduate or graduate student majoring in history with a demonstrated interest in the history of Europe.

Alan Vance Briceland Scholarship
The Alan Vance Briceland Scholarship is established by Dr. Briceland, Professor Emeritus of History, and is awarded to an undergraduate student who has received an ‘A’ in History 300. The recipient will be selected by the History Department Honors and Awards Committee.

Penelope Warren Briceland Scholarship
The Penelope Warrane Briceland Scholarship is established in her memory by her husband, Dr. Alan Briceland. It is awarded to an undergraduate student who has received an ‘A’ in History 300. The recipient will be selected by the History Department Honors and Awards Committee.

Daniel Jordan Scholarship
The Daniel P. Jordan scholarship in history was established by William H. Mattox, ’80, to honor the teaching, mentoring, scholarship and inspiration of Dr. Daniel Jordan, former professor and chair of the Department of History at VCU. Dr. Jordan is also known for his leadership as the former Executive Director of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation. The scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate student majoring in history.

Craig E. Kennedy Scholarship*
This scholarship was established by Craig Kennedy, husband of the late Dr. Susan Estabrook Kennedy. Two scholarships are awarded annually. The recipients are determined by a committee in the Department of History. An application is required. Candidates must have a 3.5 GPA if applying for the scholarship on a merit basis; or a 2.5 GPA if seeking the award for both need and merit. Both undergraduate and graduate students majoring in history are eligible.
Amount: $500 per semester

Susan Estabrook Kennedy Memorial Scholarship
The College of Humanities and Sciences established the Susan Estabrook Kennedy Memorial Scholarship in honor of Dr. Susan E. Kennedy, who is remembered as a “woman of firsts.” She published the first book produced by a member of the history department, was the first woman promoted to associate and full professor of history, the first to chair the department, and was VCU’s first recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. In addition, Dr. Kennedy served as administrative associate to the president, as associate and interim dean of the College, and as acting vice provost for academic affairs. The award will be made annually to an undergraduate history major based on merit.

Alden Aaroe Scholarship
Mrs. Frances Aaroe established this fund in 1994 in memory of her husband, Alden Aaroe, a broadcast journalist and one of Richmond’s most popular radio personalities. Scholarships are awarded to two rising sophomores with the highest GPA in the School of Mass Communications’ broadcast and print journalism programs.

Gene B. Creasy Scholarship
Established by Mrs. Cindy Creasy Woolfolk (B.S. ’87) in 1999 in honor of her father, broadcast-veteran Gene B. Creasy. The scholarship is awarded to a rising junior or senior broadcast major from Virginia with a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

George T. Crutchfield Journalism Scholarship
This fund was created in 1989 by friends of George T. Crutchfield, a faculty member and former director of the School of Mass Communications. The scholarship is awarded to a rising junior or senior majoring in the news-editorial program, and is based on academic achievement, financial need and the promise of success in newspaper work.

Lincoln Financial Media Journalism Scholarship
Established as an endowed fund in 2007, the Lincoln Financial Media Journalism Scholarship is awarded to a rising junior in the School of Mass Communications, who is in the study of print/broadcast journalism.

Martin Agency Endowed Scholarship
The Martin Agency of Richmond created this scholarship in 1989. It is awarded to a rising senior minority student majoring in advertising or public relations.

Joseph S. Mason Scholarship
Richard (B.S. ’83) and Elizabeth (B.S. ’84) Mason created this scholarship fund in 1994 in honor of Mr. Mason’s father, Joseph. It is awarded to a mass communications senior who is studying advertising. The award is based on merit, as well as demonstrated student and community leadership.

Robert Beverly Orndorff Scholarship
R. Beverly Orndorff, former science and medicine reporter for the Richmond Times-Dispatch, is honored with this scholarship, which was established by Media General/Richmond Newspapers, Inc. in 1997. The scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior undergraduate or graduate mass communications student interested in pursuing science reporting in print journalism. Academic achievement is the main criterion.

Ted J. Smith III Memorial Scholarship*
This scholarship honors the former Ted J. Smith, professor of Mass Communications from 1987 until his death in 2004. He was a passionate defender of free speech and conveyed those ideals in his courses on communications law, ethics, and media-government relations. The scholarship is available to mass communications seniors who intend to enroll in VCU graduate school. Contact the department for specific application details.

Scott Stevens Scholarship
Mr. Clinton Smith, a popular Richmond radio personality known as Scott Stevens, was a member of the adjunct faculty in VCU’s School of Mass Communications for several years, teaching radio production and writing classes. The scholarship, established by friends and colleagues of Stevens upon his death in 2003, honors his teaching legacy and will be awarded annually to an upper division broadcast journalism student interested in pursuing a broadcasting career.

T. Edward Temple and Polly D. Temple Writing Award
The late Mr. Morton Wallerstein created this scholarship in 1976 in honor of Mr. and Mrs. T. Edward Temple. Scholarships are awarded to rising senior mass communications majors chosen by the faculty as the most promising writers in print journalism.

Virginia Communications Hall of Fame Scholarship
In recognition of outstanding Virginia communicators, this scholarship was established by the faculty and funded by an anonymous donor in 1992. It is awarded to an undergraduate student based on merit, need and writing skills.

The Adcenter currently has more than a dozen scholarships available to qualified students who possess outstanding promise in their chosen career track. Many of these scholarships are endowed through foundations established to honor highly respected individuals in the advertising industry; others are funded through industry-related nonprofit organizations. Upon acceptance into the program, students will receive more details on eligibility requirements, as well as an Adcenter Scholarship application form. The Mary Lou Gibson Memorial Scholarship
Established by J. Larry Gibson in honor of his wife, Mary Lou Gibson, who died on Feb.11, 2002. She was a retired adjunct instructor and in 1986 became the first teacher-in-residence in VCU’s Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. The recipient must be a rising junior or senior mathematics major with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and must demonstrate intent to teach mathematics.

Bijan Rao Scholarship
The College of Humanities and Sciences and the Department of Physics established the Bijan Rao Scholarship in Physics in honor of Dr. Bijan K. Rao, a beloved physics professor known for his research in atomic clusters and nanoscale science. Dr. Rao passed away in May 2004. The scholarship will be awarded annually to an undergraduate physics major and will be assessed on academic merit.

The Corazzini Award for Therapeutic Group Work
The scholarship was established jointly by the Department of Psychology and University Counseling Services to honor Dr. John (Jack) Corazzini, director of Counseling Services and a professor in the Department of Psychology. Corazzini was active in research on and theorizing about the dynamics of therapy groups. He was both a scientist and a practitioner. The award will be given annually to a graduate student who has demonstrated interest in therapy groups, and whose proposal for a project in the area is judged to be the most meritorious and the most likely to be accomplished.

Elizabeth Fries Memorial Scholarship in Psychology
The Elizabeth A. Fries Scholarship in Psychology was established by family, friends, colleagues and students of Dr. Elizabeth A. Fries in her memory at VCU. Dr. Fries was a renowned professor and researcher in the VCU Department of Psychology. She died in 2005. The scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate student in the Psychology Program.

The John P. Hill Award for the Study of Adolescent Development
This scholarship was established in 1989 in honor of Dr. John P. Hill, former Department of Psychology chair and internationally acclaimed scholar in the field of adolescence. The award is given each year to a graduate student in psychology who exhibits high academic standards and evidence of promise in research in adolescent or family development.

Just Research*
The Just Research Scholarship was established at VCU by Dr. and Mrs. Robert Green. Professor Green earned a B.S. degree (with honors) in Psychology in 1967 and an MSW degree from the School of Social Work in 1970. He was a faculty member at the School of Social Work from 1975 until 2005 and upon his retirement, was awarded the rank of Professor Emeritus.

Master’s Level Award Scholarship
Established by an anonymous donor in 1998 in honor of Mrs. Evelyn E. Gunst, this scholarship is awarded to a master’s level graduate student. It is based on merit and financial need.

Deborah Braffman Schroeder Research Scholarship
Established in memoriam in 1990 by the family of Ms. Schroeder, a former Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Psychology, this scholarship is awarded to a graduate student in clinical psychology who has demonstrated financial need. Preference is given to students who pursue research in psychology.

Amin Alimard Scholarship in Public Administration
Friends, family and colleagues of Dr. Amin Alimard established the Amin Alimard Scholarship in Public Administration in honor of his accomplishments during more than 20 years of service to the University. Dr. Alimard was an associate professor of political science and public administration and previously served as director of the Public Administration Program. He was awarded emeritus status upon his retirement in 2003. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduate student in the Public Administration Program based on merit.

Excellence in Virginia Government Awards Scholarship
The Excellence in Virginia Government Awards Scholarship is established through proceeds from the annual Excellence in Virginia Government awards ceremony. The ceremony celebrates the achievements of public servants in the commonwealth of Virginia. The EVGA scholarships are given in honor of the Lifetime Achievement Award winner for the preceding year. The scholarship is open to both undergraduate and graduate students in the Wilder School.

Leigh E. Grosenick Scholarship in Public Administration
Dr. Leigh E. Grosenick was instrumental in founding VCU’s Public Administration Program in 1975 and was the program’s first director. The Leigh E. Grosenick Scholarship in Public Administration was established by family, friends and colleagues following his premature death in December 1999. The scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving graduate student in the Public Administration Program.

Eva S. Hardy Scholarship in Public Administration
The Eva S. Hardy Scholarship in Public Administration is established by Ms. Hardy and is awarded to a student in the Master’s of Public Administration program who is a representative of a previously underserved population. The award will be made on the basis of merit and is renewable.

James Hooker Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2006 by friends and faculty colleagues of James Hooker, former professor of criminal justice and public safety studies. The scholarship is available to undergraduate or graduate students who have completed six hours in a program of study in either criminal justice or public safety. A minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher in those courses is required.

ICMA – T. Edward Temple Scholarship in Public Administration
This scholarship is in memory of T. Edward Temple, a former Richmond city manager and president of VCU. It was created by the International City Management Association. It is awarded to a graduate student in the public administration program who is a resident of Virginia and committed to working in Virginia local government. The award is based on financial need, academic achievement and career promise.
Amount: As determined by VCU Foundation distribution policy.
Nonprofit Management Scholarships
Established in 1999 by Mr. Alan Kirshner of The Markel Corporation. These scholarships are awarded to part-time students in the Nonprofit Management Program.
Amount: Up to $1,500

Tillett Scholarship for Government and Public Affairs
The Tillett Scholarship in Government and Public Affairs at the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs is established by the Honorable and Mrs. Ronald L. Tillett ’79. The scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate student majoring in a degree program offered by the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs.

VCPA – T. Edward Temple Scholarship
Named for former VCU president, T. Edward Temple, this scholarship was established in 1989 by the Virginia Citizen Planning Association. It is awarded to the second-year graduate student with the best academic record in urban studies and planning.

Scholarship for Women’s International Studies Experiences*
Established by an anonymous donor, this scholarship provides funding for a deserving student to participate in women’s studies international experiences such as a semester study abroad, summer study abroad, or other international or global activist experiences where academic credit is earned. The recipient must seek a major or minor in Women’s Studies, have a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher at the time of application, and demonstrate campus or community leadership or service.

The Marianne Burns Brown Memorial Scholarship
The Marianne Burns Brown Memorial Scholarship was established in 2004 in honor of Brown’s lifetime of exceptional community service. Applicants must be a junior or senior student in the School of World Studies, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, have evidence of outstanding public or volunteer engagement. Specific criteria are available through the School of World Studies.

Janet D. Sheridan Scholarship
This scholarship was established by an anonymous donor in 1998 in honor of adjunct professor Janet Sheridan. It is awarded to a language major with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who demonstrates excellence in his or her area of language concentration.

Kenneth A. Stackhouse Scholarship
This scholarship was established in honor of Kenneth A. Stackhouse, professor in the Department of Foreign Languages from 1971 – 2001. It is awarded to a junior- or senior-level student majoring in Spanish. To be eligible, candidates must have a GPA of 3.2 or higher. This award is based on merit.

The Dr. Christina Turner Award
The Dr. Christina Turner Award was established in 2008 and commemorates the lifelong achievements of Dr. Turner in teaching. Dr. Turner was a cherished instructor with a particular passion for improving the writing skills of her students. Many students over the years have thanked Dr. Turner for her help with making them better critical thinkers and writers. The aim of this award is to maintain her legacy as a teacher and her focus on writing as a necessary skill in today’s society.

Volkmar Risch Memorial Scholarship
The Volkmar Risch Memorial Scholarship was established through gifts made by family, friends, colleagues and previous students of Volkmar Risch, an adjunct professor of German in the School of World Studies. The scholarship continues Professor Risch’s legacy as a teacher of German and a dedicated member of the VCU and Richmond communities. The scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate student studying German.
