“Saving the past informs the future...”

Kimberly Merkel Chen has worked for over 25 years in the fields of architectural history, historic preservation, and urban planning. Prior to joining Johannas DesignGroup in 2005 as a partner, Kim owned her own business in Richmond, Virginia, specializing in planning and historic preservation services.

After graduating from the University of Virginia in 1978 with a degree in Architectural History, Kim received a wide range of experience in cultural resources management and design while working for State and Federal historic preservation agencies and small architectural firms. Fascinated by the correlation between historic preservation and urban design, Kim completed a Masters of Urban Studies and Planning Degree with a concentration in Urban Revitalization from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1989.

Kim continues to apply her interest in urban design and historic preservation in both her professional and personal pursuits. Currently a distinguished member of the Adjunct Faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University, Kim teaches graduate level courses in Historic Preservation Planning and all of her classes are infused in community service projects, giving students opportunities to apply skills as they are learning them.
